Apollo Tyres began construction at its first European greenfield facility recently with a foundation stone laying ceremony. The plant in Gyöngyöshalász, Hungary, is expected to start production in early 2017.
“This is a significant milestone for us at Apollo Tyres, considering that a few years back we didn’t have any presence in Europe, and today, we are looking at having our second manufacturing unit in place. With the new capacity in Hungary, we will be able to further increase our focus on the European market,” said Onkar Kanwar, chairman of Apollo Tyres, during the ceremony.
Supplementing its Netherlands facility, the Hungary plant will produce 5.5 million Apollo- and Vredestein-branded passenger and light truck tires as well as 675,000 commercial tires a year for the European market, according to Apollo.
